Why don’t animal shelters give away the animals so they dont have to be euthanized?

Most animal shelters charge for their animals, and if they are not bought they euthanize them. Why dont they just give them away for free (and/or a donation), so that it could possibly cut down on the amount of animals euthanized?

Because if someone can’t afford the small fee of adoption, then most likely they won’t be able to afford the cost of caring for a pet (food, vet visits, vaccinations, etc). Also, the adoption fee a lot of the time goes towards the above & spaying/neutering of the animal to begin with. So really, they shelters aren’t making $$ on the adoption fee!

I think the charge is more to pay for the shots, spay or neuter more than anything. Plus they have to charge something to keep the shelter up and running, provide food and care for the animals.

Some people use cats as “bait” while training dogs to fight. They try to get these cats for free.

They charge an adoption fee to make sure that the person really wants a pet and aren’t just getting one simply because they are free, and if a person can’t afford an adoption fee, they shouldn’t have a pet.

The main reason is so that they can spay/neuter, feed, vaccinate, and provide proper care for the animals that they take in.

Agree with 1st poster, think about it the shelter needs money to stay open for 1, 2 is a social stigmata those whom cant afford the fee probally cant afford to feed and pay medical expensives.
And if they were giving them away for free any1 could get them, some would look after well but theres allways the minority that will abuse or kill the animals.
Im an animal lover, id much rather see a dog or cat euthanized than for them to suffer.

Cause no one wants them, hence, how they end up in the shelter in the first place. Plus, it’s not safe to just give away an animal to people who you don’t know if they’ll make the situation better or worse for the animal.

How do u expect animal shelters to give animals away when they get at least ten more dogs a day??? People buy animals from the shelter then the next day they bring them back. Most people just drop off their animals at shelters, and leave the shelter take care of them. It’s not like the shelter can choose, they have to take in the animals and care for them. Shelters run out of room and try their hardest to sell them, but no body wants them. Shelters do send animals to rescues. Most shelters put down animals that are very sick, and can’t be cured, and aren’t adoptable (bite, harm you,un friendly, etc.) I wish shelters could sell more animals but it’s hard when you sell one animal it’s like two more strays come and take its place.

my humane society costs approximately $15,000-$20,000 EACH MONTH to stay open. we are run strictly on donations, as no government money comes to us, nor any money from larger organizations like the HSUS.

before an animal goes home, it is given a vet check, wormed, immunized, neutered and put on hw prevention. this is not free to us. if it were not for the fees we have to pass on to people, we wouldn’t be open very long. and that would mean even less animals would be helped in our community.

be sure you place the blame for the euthanizing on the correct people, please, not on those of us who have to go through with it. at no point in my life did i ever think to myself. “hmmmm, i’m an animal lover. but i think when i get older, i’d like to kill innocent animals for a living.” and as horrible as it is to be euthanized, there are far worse things than death waiting for an animal that goes to the wrong home. i have seen some of the worst that mankind has to offer; and i’d rather see those dogs & cats get put to sleep rather than go thru the daily abuse they may endure in the hands of the wrong people.

while i applaud your wanting to find a solution to this problem, this is not the direction to go.
