Why do cats shake their paws when they drink?

Whenever our cats are given milk to drink, they shake their front paws as if they are wet. I’ve seen other cats do this when drinking also. Why is this?

My cats don’t do this. The only time i have seen them do it is when the stick their paw in the milk, and they shake it to get it off. Or my cat will shake her paw afterwards right before she starts cleaning her face…just to make sure her paw is ready for the cleansing action!

To get the liquid of off their paws. They may shake them out of habit even if they are not wet. A lot of animal behavior is conditioned response. Further, there is something known as gained behavior. This is behavior developed for a purpose and when the purpose goes away the animal continues to do it even when it has no purpose. The cats may associate drinking milk with wet paws and shake their paws based on this association.

I’ve seen cats that knead when they drink but not shake them (unless they were wet).

And just for an FYI you should not give your cats milk.

Milk is not good for animals because many of them are lactose intolerant and will develop diarrhea Pets often lack the enzyme that is required to break down the sugar in milk and this can cause them to develop vomiting, diarrhea and other gastrointestinal symptoms. Even though they like it, especially cats, refrain from giving your pets milk.
