Hm, a bit old to have to learn new tricks but it’s doable. Has he ever used the litter box?
Cover every inch of his cage floors with bedding like old t-shirts. Hang water bottles in some corners and put food bowls in other because ferrets won’t poop where they eat or sleep. Put a litter box into one corner and watch him when he first wakes up. Ferrets will have to go within minutes of waking. When you see him backing into a corner take him and put him into the litter box. Praise him and give him a treat if he does it, better luck next time if he don’t. Keep watching him and repeat the procedure every time you see him backing up with his tail held high. Now, if he’s never used the box scoop up some of the poop and leave it in the litter box for the rest of the day at least. It will tell him what the box is for, pooping, and that it’s not just a neat digging box or a nice sleepy spot. Ferrets will never be 100% and will have to have refresher courses, cause they will forget.
Make sure you have litter boxes around the area you let him run in. Should you see him back up and you’re across the room from him, yell NO as you go get him and put him in the box. It stops him for a second and gives you time to get there.
Mine are all trained, but there is one spot by the door of their room that they insist on going right next to the litter box and I think it’s because that is where people and all the new smells come into their little world. I guess they feel like they have to mark their territory right there, so I put paper down. I get the Classifieds or Car Classifieds you get for free at the gas station or the grocery store. Just grab a handful every time you’re in there(Walmart has them by their exit too).
Sometimes they don’t like the litter you’re using or the kind of litter box you have. Some ferrets only want litter boxes that will hold their whole body as they go(big square ones) others like the corner ones. I use Yesterdays News for litter and they like it alright. You may have to experiment with things like that.
Good luck, hope things work out for you. The oldest one I ever re-trained was 1 1/2 yrs old. I have four of them, two boys, two girls.
PS: ANGEL DANIE……….ferrets are ranked at #3 on the popularity chart right now, right after cats and dogs. So who’s a weirdo???
